We understand that participating in a magazine feature may be a new experience for many people. The information below is intended to answer some of the most common questions about the process, what to expect, and how participation works. Our goal is to create a comfortable, welcoming, and collaborative experience where every participant feels respected, celebrated, and represented authentically. If you have questions that are not addressed in this guide, please don't hesitate to reach out. 1.Is there a cost to participate?
No. Participation in the magazine is completely free.
2.Do I need modeling experience?
Not at all. Most participants have never been professionally photographed before. Guidance and posing assistance will be provided throughout the entire process.
3.wHAT HAPPENS DURING THE INTERVIEW?
The interview is simply a conversation designed to help gather information for your article. Questions may cover topics such as your background, culture, experiences, interests, values, memories, and personal journey.
4.wILL THE INTERVIEW BE RECORDED?
No. Interviews are not recorded or published as part of the standard magazine process.
Notes will be taken throughout the conversation, and in some cases an audio recording may be used privately for reference purposes only to ensure important details aren’t missed. These recordings are not shared publicly.
5.WILL MY VOICE BE INCLUDED ANYWHERE?
Not unless you choose to participate in an optional podcast interview.
6.do i have to participate in the podcast?
No. The podcast is completely optional and is not required for magazine participation.
7.what is the podcast?
Participants who would like to share their story in a longer conversational format may choose to be featured on Abigayl On Air, the companion podcast to the magazine. Podcast participation is entirely voluntary and will only take place with your permission.
8.what if i don't want to do a full interview?
That’s perfectly okay. Participants may choose to be featured in a Cultural Spotlight or Visual Story feature instead of a traditional article. These features place a greater emphasis on photography while still celebrating culture, identity, and personal expression. Because the purpose of these features is to highlight and celebrate cultural heritage, participants are still asked to represent their culture through traditional clothing, accessories, meaningful cultural items, or other elements that reflect their background.
At minimum, participants must be willing to share their home country or cultural heritage so that the feature can be accurately represented within the magazine. While not required, participants are strongly encouraged to also share their name, age, and country of origin.
9.what kinds of questions will i be asked?
Questions are designed to be thoughtful and conversational. There are no right or wrong answers and participants are never required to answer anything they are uncomfortable discussing. There are sample questions included in this packet.
10.Can i skip questions?
Absolutely. You are always welcome to decline any question or topic.
11.how long does the process take?
The process typically includes an initial consultation, a photo session, an interview or feature discussion, and the creation of your final article. Timeframes may vary depending on production schedules.
12.what should i wear for my photoshoot?
Participants will receive wardrobe guidance prior to their session. For cultural features, traditional or culturally significant clothing is encouraged when appropriate and meaningful.
13.Can i bring someone with me?
Yes. Participants are welcome to bring a trusted friend, family member, or support person to their session if it helps them feel more comfortable.
14.will i get to see my photos?
Yes. Participants will receive access to their final selected images as part of their completed feature.
15.will i receive a copy of my article?
Yes. Participants will receive a digital copy of the full edition of the magazine once it is finalized.
16.who is this project for?
Absent Magazine welcomes adults from all backgrounds, cultures, experiences, professions, and walks of life. The goal is to celebrate people and their stories.
17.Why did you choose me?
Participants are selected because something about their story, culture, perspective, experiece, or presence felt meaningful and worth celebrating. The goal of the magazine is not to feature celebrites or professional models but real people with unique experiences and perspectives.
